Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Trafford, PA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Trafford which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
