Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Warren, PA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Warren which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
