Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - West Alexander, PA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in West Alexander which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
