Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - White, PA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in White which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
