Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Early Branch, SC.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Early Branch which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
