Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Hill City, SD.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Hill City that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
