Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Lead, SD.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Lead that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
