Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Mitchell, SD.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Mitchell which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
