Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - White River, SD.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in White River that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
