The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its duties is the administering of opioid rehab facilities, which are programs which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine given are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted clients. An opioid treatment facility can receive basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment center is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of accreditation it has been granted.
