Drug treatment services for the hearing impaired are offered in both an outpatient and inpatient setting. People with hearing impairment may be at a greater risk of addiction problems as a result of their handicap. Having a significant impairment can be a source of distress, discouragement, depression and apathy for both adults and adolescents who may turn to alcohol or drugs to deal with these feelings and emotions. Hearing impaired treatment services are available in Cotton Center to stop the cycle of addiction for these clients, with ASL and other assistance which provides recovery and treatment information and education in writing so that patients aren't inhibited from receiving help because of their impairment.
Drug treatment centers that have full time staff to help the hearing impaired are the most ideal programs to consider. Some rehabs may only employ part-time staff to interpret and assist this demographic, which this means hearing impaired clients won't benefit as much as everyone else and will miss out on important activities they should be participating in daily. There may be video presentations offered which utilize sign language as well, which is also quite helpful.
There are organizations and agencies that can provide hearing impaired people struggling with substance abuse issues with resources and information to find the treatment services they need. One of these is the Deaf Off Drugs and Alcohol (DODA).
