If an individual is getting outpatient detoxification they must go to the center assisting them with their detox daily or at least five days a week in most situations. Outpatient detox services are either done in the evening or daytime, which makes it ideal for someone who needs to maintain a regular work or school schedule. Some facilities may offer options to receive treatment in a choice of normal outpatient or outpatient day treatment, to augment detoxification services and prevent relapse.
A standard amount of time people participate in outpatient detoxification is approximately a week. A number of facilities use medically assisted detox approaches while others provide drug free detox services. At times when medications are needed to avert life-threatening withdrawal symptoms, like with alcohol and benzodiazepine medications where seizures are at times a problem. Otherwise, medical staff at the facility help individuals manage their physical, emotional and psychological symptoms of cravings and withdrawal until they are detoxified and stabilized.
While outpatient detox in May is more flexible for apparent reasons, a very serious disadvantage is that people are at a greater chance of falling back into addiction due to the access they keep to drugs. Ideally, clients will then go into a log-term or short-term recovery program to address the causes of their addiction once outpatient or inpatient detoxification is complete.
