IOP's involve treatment which takes place much more frequently than normal outpatient, where clients will participate in the treatment usually once or twice a week unless otherwise determined.
Intensive outpatient treatment typically consists of group and sometimes individualized counseling meetings to continue to help address the person's addiction. Individual sessions often occur at least once a week, and group sessions will provide the peer support that is essential for long term sobriety. While in intensive outpatient treatment, focus is placed on improving relapse prevention skills, the management of every day challenges and triggers, and how to manage any lingering withdrawal symptoms and drug cravings. Some intensive outpatient treatment programs include family and couples/marriage counseling into the treatment process, which may be beneficial for people who must repair their lives with their families and loved ones.
