Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Elsinore, UT.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Elsinore which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
