Clients referred from the court for substance abuse rehabilitation are typically referred because they are being granted a chance to accept treatment in lieu of jail time, other charges, fines, etc. While this is more prevalent among first time offenders, it can be offered at any time including while the defendant is being held in jail. There are different types of facilities that criminal justice clients might be referred to, and this depends on which programs are local to Gunlock and the type of drug or alcohol they'll need treatment for.
There are programs that work primarily with the criminal justice court system to administer to this specific group of clientele, and are usually state or federally funded or are available at no cost or very little cost to the client. There are also private drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities that may be approved by the court if there is a specific type of rehabilitation that the client needs or wants that a state-funded facility can't fulfill. The client's attorney can propose such alternatives to the judge for permission. There are even substance abuse rehab facilities that operate out of the correctional institutions themselves, where clients are often in a better position for early release or other leniencies when engaging in drug treatment services while serving their time for a drug offense or a DUI/DWI.
