Clients referred from the court for substance abuse rehabilitation are most commonly referred because they are being granted a chance to receive treatment in lieu of jail time, other charges, fines, etc. While this is most common with first time offenders, it can be offered at any time including while the defendant is already incarcerated. There are various types of facilities that offenders can be referred to, and it usually all depends on which programs are local to Highland and the type of drug or alcohol they'll need treatment for.
There are treatment programs that work primarily with the courts to treat this explicit group of clientele, and are usually state or federally funded or are available at no cost or very little cost to the client. There are also private drug recovery centers that can be approved by the court if there is a specific type of rehabilitation that the client requires or desires that a different program can't fulfill. The defendant's attorney can request such options to the judge for approval. There are even substance abuse rehabilitation facilities that provide services from the correctional institutions themselves, whereas clients are sometimes in a better position for reduced sentences or other leniencies when enrolling in drug rehab services while serving their sentence for a drug related offense or a DUI/DWI.
