Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Bluefield, VA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Bluefield which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
