There are programs offered in or near Burkes Garden that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will ideally no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary services, and it is encouraged.
