Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Dugspur, VA.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Dugspur which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary services, and it is encouraged.
