Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Falls Church, VA.

There are addiction programs offered in or near Falls Church which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will ideally not engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
