Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Mollusk, VA.

There are substance abuse programs available in or near Mollusk which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not engage in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and it is encouraged.
