Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Triangle, VA.

There are addiction programs offered in or near Triangle which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
