Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Vesuvius, VA.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Vesuvius that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will instead no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary services, and it is recommended and encouraged.
