Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Woolwine, VA.

There are programs offered in or near Woolwine that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
