Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - East Arlington, VT.

There are programs offered in or near East Arlington which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
