Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Jacksonville, VT.

There are programs offered in or near Jacksonville which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is encouraged.
