Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Airway Heights, WA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Airway Heights which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
