Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Camp Murray, WA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Camp Murray that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
