The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid treatment facilities, which are centers which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications administered are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Hunters are programs which are legally allowed to give out the medicines used in MAT as long as they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services in addition to medicine like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment center can receive initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehab facility is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified each year or every 3 years depending on the type of certification it has been granted.
