The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its duties is the oversight of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medications prescribed are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Rice are programs who are legally allowed to dispense the drugs used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary services in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment center can get their basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year.
