Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Abbotsford, WI.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Abbotsford which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
