The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its obligations is the oversight of opioid treatment facilities, which are centers that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications administered are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Amherst are programs who are officially allowed to distribute the drugs used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also get ancillary services aside from medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab facility can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehabilitation program is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every three years depending on the type of certification that was granted.
