Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Brokaw, WI.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Brokaw that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
