The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its obligations is the oversight of opioid rehab facilities, which are centers who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medications given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Cornell are programs that are officially allowed to distribute the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services in addition to medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab facility can get their initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehab programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment facility is certified, they need to get re-certified every year or every three years depending on the kind of accreditation it has been given.
