The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of health efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid treatment programs, which are centers which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine administered are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab centers in Hilbert are programs which are officially allowed to dispense the drugs used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive ancillary benefits aside from medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab center can get their basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the type of accreditation that was granted.
