Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Humbird, WI.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Humbird which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
