Smoking Allowed in Designated Area - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Iron Belt, WI.

It is estimated that around 75% of clients at residential rehabilitation programs for drug and alcohol addiction are smokers. While it is true that nicotine is addicting and clients in any sort of treatment for addiction should endeavor to be abstinent from all addictive substances, this can present problems that make enforcing a smoking ban outweigh the advantages of such restrictions. Someone who is addicted to a substance that could very well kill them immediately might not agree to go to treatment if they must quit smoking cigarettes, so many rehab centers in Iron Belt allow smoking with some limitations, restrictions and in designated areas of their facility.

Some programs allow clients to smoke anywhere, so long as it is outside for instance. Some rehab centers have a designated smoking area, and this is the only area that clients are allowed to smoke in. Because nicotine is an addictive substance, even treatment programs that have a designated area and allow smoking typically offer alternatives to smoking if the client wants to quit, such as nicotine patches, nicotine gum and prescriptions. There are also facilities which permit smoking in designated areas, but educate clients on the health risks associated with smoking by including this into their program either by way of direct education or by offering educational literature for clients to examine. In facilities which permit smoking in designated areas this is sometimes only approved for clients, whereas staff are sometimes restricted from smoking at the center or are encouraged to not smoke in front of clients.

Publicly funded drug and alcohol treatment facilities are obligated by the rules and restrictions in regards to smoking that are imposed by state and federal agencies which oversee and administer these programs. Private rehabilitation facilities have a little more tolerance and don't have as many restrictions imposed on them, so may be more likely to provide designated areas for smoking.
