There are addiction programs offered in or near Mount Hope which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary services, and it is recommended and encouraged.
