The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to advance the mental health of the U.S.. One of its obligations is the oversight of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medications prescribed are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Oregon are programs who are officially permitted to give out the medications used in MAT as long as they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary services in addition to medicine like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab program can get their initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehab programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab center is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification that was granted.
