Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Poplar, WI.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Poplar which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
