Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Culloden, WV.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Culloden which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
