Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Four States, WV.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Four States that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
