Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.
There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.
These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Freeman which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
