Medicare is a federal health insurance program which helps pay for health benefits for individuals living in the Unites States who are either disabled or 65 years of age or older. For people who do have Medicare and need substance abuse recovery services in Ireland, this program can cover certain treatment programs and recovery services. Medicare consists of different "Parts", with Parts A-D covering various types of treatment.

Part A (Insurance for Hospital Stays) - Medicare Part A pays for inpatient drug and alcohol treatment, and up to 60 days in treatment without a co-pay but individuals will have to pay a deductible. Medicare only covers a total of 190 days of inpatient care, as in during the person's lifetime.

Part D (Prescription Insurance) Medicare Part D pays for drug and alcohol addiction medications. Including medications needed for withdrawal symptoms during detoxification and medications required for maintenance therapy such as methadone or buprenorphine.
