Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Macfarlan, WV.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Macfarlan which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
