Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.
There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.
These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Salt Rock which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
